We returned from a cruise in Europe this August and spent a fabulous day touring Sicily with Mario. He is an absolutely delightful guide for a wonderful day of sightseeing. He promptly picked us up dockside in Messina as promised (I have been left waiting at the pier for over an hour with some other guides in other cities). We had emailed several times over the year deciding where we wanted to go. We went up to Castemola first, (a quaint, picturesque town) and strolled the cobblestones around the unique shops, sampled chilled local liquor, and viewed Mt. Etna spewing smoke over majestic scenery.
Then we drove down to Taormina and walked the crowded shop-lined streets, looked at the huge lemons and local produce, wonderful ceramics and unique crafts. Strolled through magnificent gardens with breath-taking views. After eating some gelato we were taken to a viewing balcony overlooking the most turquoise-watered bay and were treated to absolutely beautiful, delicious pastries. It was such a treat and just MADE the moment frozen and special forever! I never had a tour guide so perfect-- not too much info and not hovering and yet also accompanying to point out important and special sites.
Afterwards we drove back to Messina and went to the church that overlooks the ship and were told a local legend about the statue in the harbor, then onto the fabulous Astronomical Clock, where all the mechanisms were pointed out and explained, and we stood there patiently waiting for the clock to move. Delightful!
Mario showed us all his credentials. It was Picture perfect (I took over 100 shots that day). He was just wonderful to be with--- the price was right -- I was wonderful things-- what more could you ask for on tour?

The pastries were an unexpected treat. They were the kind of special, delightful things that one hopes to experience on a vacation. They made the day memorable as well. I would use him again in a heartbeat and highly recommend him to anyone looking to spend a relaxing, delightful day cruising around Messina, and surrounding cities. I felt perfectly safe. He had excellent driving skills and was extremely considerate. For me, it was perfect!
By the way, my husband and I met wonderful new friends from England, as Mario contacted us that they were on our ship and tried to book him the same day as we had. We agreed to share the car and the price, and now we are good friends. They loved the day as much as we did, so we also have him to thank for that!
